Man harms nature, but protects it as well. I would like to highlight the acts of both
cruelty and kindness that man has shown towards nature.
Many human
activities bring damage to nature. Due to the reckless handling of nature,
whether for need or greed, man has begun to tear down his very surroundings. Deforestation,
pollution, the overuse of resources – there are several ways in which humans
harm nature. Ironically enough, through their activities, humans destroy the
very source of their survival. Man is a part of nature, and by destroying
nature, man is simply bringing destruction to himself. Thus, it isn’t man vs
nature as much as it is man vs man.
The
worst part, though, is that human activities affect the innocent species
existing in nature. Be it deforestation, poaching or caging, animals are
adversely affected by selfish human actions. For example, the simple action of
improper disposal of plastic or leaving fishing nets in water bodies can cause
problems for animals.
Moreover,
several animals are neglected and kept in inhuman conditions in zoos. The
following reports show how cruel human beings can be towards other living
creatures.
1. The
Surabaya Zoo in Indonesia has had several cases of mistreated animals. A lion
in this zoo was found hanged in his enclosure, while a giraffe was discovered
with plastic lining in the stomach.
2. There is a shameful
case in India as well. Reportedly, the Mumbai Zoo has kept animals in miserable
conditions. Not only that, dead animals were stuffed and displayed as taxidermy
models for visitors to see. Among these animals was the last Siberian tiger of
India.
3. In the Giza Zoo in
Egypt, the animals live in cramped, dirty cages and get little exercise or enrichment. Dozens of animals have died
here.
4. In the Kiev Zoo in
Ukraine, many animals died of maltreatment, including an elephant who reportedly died due to lack of nutrition, and a camel that wasn’t treated for an abdominal
condition. It was also found that
a lot of money was misspent at the zoo. Animals were illegally sold and the
money meant for their food was misused. Consequently, Kiev Zoo came to be known
as the “concentration camp for animals.” It was estimated that over 250 animals
died in this zoo!
It
is true that humans can be very unkind towards nature, but it is also true that
not all humans are cruel. There are people working towards the good of animals.
For
example, Dr Lucero, the veterinarian of a piglet, found the little animal
suffering with congenital defect in his rear legs. Since the piglet, which was named
Chris P. Bacon, couldn’t walk due to the defect, his vet made a special
wheelchair which helped the animal to walk. Watch this
video to see little Chris in his wheelchair!
It
isn’t just this kind-hearted vet. There are several people out there who
display kindness and compassion towards animals. They prove that even though
there are cruelties done towards animals, there is still hope. Watch this video to see these acts of kindness...
If we all work together, we can ensure that our fellow creatures are not mistreated. After all, they are as much part of nature as we are!
